Probably a lot more! You probably should know that this article is inspired by three different interactions. One, reading Niki Brown’s article, Why Logos Should Cost More Than $300. Two, reading Jacob Cass’ Why logo design does not cost $5. Third, a common question I hear from Pastors, “how do I convince my church to spend money on a website when they don’t see the need? Dear Churches and Nonprofits – Excellence Matters!

3 Comments to Read

I love the ministry philosophy of Jack Graham, “Excellence in all things, and all things to the glory of God.” Today, Seth Godin hammers this truth home in his blog entitled The problem with non. His point? Nonprofits are usually too timid to be excellent enough to compete. Read the rest of this article »

Designing A Church Logo? Some Things to Remember

7 Comments to Read

bad-church-logo

I like logos, and I certainly like church. I design church logos, in fact. So as I’ve sought inspiration by looking at other church logos, I’ve run across a lot of church “logos” about which I’d have to say, Jesus would not do this! So I thought I’d give some “subtle” advice in the way of some tips and tricks, beginning with what NOT to do… I mean never!!

Blog About God Logo

Matt Fraser will soon be launching a very great personal blog and managed to find a great domain name for it, so he contacted me about a logo. After working through five or six possible concepts, and while trying avoid using imagery to convey the idea of God, we settled in on this idea of personal reflection. It stems from the fact that “blog” and “God” are such apt reflections of each other, and this blog will be Matt’s reflections on his walk with God.

The Storehouse Logo

I designed this logo for our food distribution ministry at church. In the biblical book of Malachi, the “storehouse” was the place where grain was requested to be brought so that there would always be food in the Temple. So the wheat or grain represents God’s store or provision for the poor and hungry.

I created this logo to match the domain, pulpitpoints.com. My idea was to create an online magazine about preaching, but time hasn’t allowed me to pursue it, so I’m selling the logo and domain together via IncSpring. You can view details here.

Lindsay Lane Baptist Church in Florissant, Missouri was in need of a logo and website design, along with a content management system so that they could easily add information and articles to their web site. The logo concept is based on the image of a lane leading people to the cross, where lives are changed. The web site is warm and personal and offers multiple easy entryways into basic information about the church for any first time site visitor, which is the primary target audience. The site is built on WordPress.

I thought it was very cool not only to read Lauren Hunter’s article about me and the Ministry Theme, but then to see the finished product of Lauren’s writing appear in a magazine. You can download the article about using web sites for ministry over at Church & Worship Technology. Cool!

WordPress for Ministry Gallery Launched

6 Comments to Read

I’ve recently launched a little fun project over at WP for Ministry. It’s intended to be a gallery of churches, ministries, pastors, and even Christian web designers using WordPress to power their sites. The theme for WP for Ministry is an Elegant Theme. Feel free to offer a submission with a screenshot and a description.

Ministry Theme – Premium WordPress Theme for Church & Ministry

2 Comments to Read

Ministry Theme Screenshot

Update: The Ministry Theme was initially intended to be a theme for purchase, but because of the swirling debate surrounding commercially licensed WordPress themes, I’m attempting to remain above reproach. You may donate below, but the theme and all code is now licensed as GPL.

The Ministry Theme has been a LONG time in the making. It’s a premium WordPress theme designed with churches and ministries in mind. The support site, www.ministrytheme.com, will be launched very soon, but you can go ahead and pick up a copy now! The theme features…

  • A clean, but easily skinnable, light design.
  • Custom home, archives, and links pages.
  • Tabbed sidebars (that degrade in IE6).
  • A DHTML menu that follows your page structure.
  • Front page post thumbnails.
  • A widgetized sidebar.
  • WordPress 2.6 ready with image and caption styling.
  • Gravatar/avatar support in the comments section.

I’ll soon be opening up a forum for support, but for now you can contact me with questions or support requests. Please note that I’m available for support and will offer tutorials publicly soon, but customizations will be handled on a quote-per-hour basis.

Check out the DEMO!

Visit www.ministrytheme.com to Download the Theme. (Downloading of the Ministry Theme has been temporarily disabled while I enhance and improve it for its next release, due in late February 2009.
